About Intelligent Home Systems

Intelligent Home Systems was founded in Scotland in 2002. For over twenty years the practice has designed and delivered the technology behind exceptional homes - Scotland's coastline and countryside providing more than a backdrop, and a constant reminder that a home's real job is to support the people living in it.

Today, that idea sits at the centre of everything we do. We work with architects, interior designers, homeowners and developers to design buildings where light, air, sound and temperature are treated with the same care as the walls and windows around them - guided by the WELL Building Standard, and delivered through Crestron and Lutron as our principal integration partners.

Founder

Ewan Smith

Ewan's background began in Physics, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, followed by eighteen years in enterprise computing - including a decade working on large-scale business systems for Digital Equipment Corporation - and an MBA in Strategic Management from Robert Gordon University. That combination shows up in how the practice works today: rigorous, process-led, and unwilling to leave anything to chance.

Ewan is an Associate Member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and is currently working towards WELL AP accreditation, the professional credential for the WELL Building Standard. His understanding of how the body responds to its environment - to light, to air, to sound - sits behind every recommendation the practice makes.

Our Approach

A building affects the people inside it whether anyone designs for that or not - sleep, mood, focus and long-term health are all shaped by decisions most projects never examine. We start from the health outcome first, and let the technology follow. Crestron and Lutron give us a proven way to deliver it, but they are the means, not the message.

Scotland and Beyond

Based in Montrose

We are based in Montrose, on Scotland's Angus coast, and work across Scotland and the wider UK. Being outside the central belt has never limited the calibre of what we deliver - working in some of Scotland's most demanding rural and coastal settings has, if anything, sharpened our attention to resilience, reliability and long-term performance.
